Who doesn’t love to travel? For some people, it is not a priority. Growing up in Connecticut, we traveled all over the Northeast and a trip to Canada. To this day, my parents have never traveled overseas. The farthest they have gone is Canada and Mexico.
Not sure where my sister and I got our travel bug from, definitely not inherited. My first international trip was in high school. I went with our theater group to London and Paris.
I went overseas again in my early 20s when I took two years off from college to work and travel. This was in the mid-90s when you had to use real maps. London alone had a directory called London A – Z that was almost an inch thick.
I always felt I learned more in my two years of travel than in four years of college.
I found a pretty journal the other day with some travel quotes. Just as the quotes inspired this post, may you be inspired by the words below to pack your bags and set off on your next adventure.
“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”
“We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfillment.”
“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.”
“I am living out my adolescent dream of travel and adventure.”
“Travel is never a matter of money, but of courage.”
“Wherever you go, go with all your heart.”
“The journey not the arrival matters.”
“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”
“Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe.”
“We must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey.”
John Hope Franklin
“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.”
“And if travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.
“One travels more usefully when alone, because he reflects more.”
“Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.”
“I’ve met the most interesting people while flying or on a boat. These methods of travel seem to attract the kind of people I want to be with.”
“You do not travel if you are afraid of the unknown. You travel for the unknown, that reveals you within yourself.”
“One’s destination is never a place, but rather a new way of looking at things.”
“Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you’ve traveled.”
“A man of ordinary talent will always be ordinary, whether he travels or not; but a man of superior talent will go to pieces if he remains forever in the same place.”
Wofgang Amadeus Mozart
“Every one of a hundred thousand cities around the world had its own special sunset and it was worth going there, just once, if only to see the sun go down.”
“Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.”
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.”
“Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.”
“There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler only who is foreign.”
Robert Louis Stevenson
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”
“One of the great things about travel is that you find out how many good, kind people there are.”
